In 2002, restrictions were introduced on the ownership of the following breeds:

  • American Pit Bull Terrier
  • American Staffordshire Terrier
  • Dogo Argentino
  • Rottweiler
  • Akita Inu
  • Fila Brasileiro (Brazilian Mastiff)
  • Tosa Inu

To obtain a license to own these breeds, the owner must:

  • Be of legal age
  • Have no criminal record
  • Be mentally and physically fit
  • Have liability insurance with a minimum coverage of €120,000
